Decking

Decking is an attractive, economical and durable material used as a feature to outdoor living and entertaining areas of Australian homes and businesses. It is very aesthetically pleasing and is becoming more and more popular for patios, pool/spa areas and to maximise living space. The most common types of decking used is Treated pine, Kapur, Batu and the alternative wood composite deckings.

Treated Pine Decking

Treated pine is the most cost effective and popular timber option for decking. Pine can be used in all decking and pergola situations provided it is properly treated. It can be stained in a range of colours to provide protection and enhance the natural beauty of the wood. The stains contain repellent waxes which slow the uptake and loss of moisture, reducing movement and minimising surface splitting. Deck sites need good drainage to avoid consequences of soil erosion and footing settlement caused by excessive water.

Kapur

Kapur is a large hardwood which is yellowish, pinkish or deep reddish brown in colour with a medium to course texture. It originates from the lowland coastal forest areas of Malaysia and Indonesia, regularly growing to a height of 60 metres.

In Malaysia and Indonesia it is used as general construction timber. Large quantities have been imported over the years to Australia for similar applications, but more recently is being used as decking.

Batu

Selangan Batu (commonly known as Batu) is a yellow brown, reddish brown and sometimes purplish brown timber which darkens with age. It has a fine to medium texture with a wavy interlocked grain and a medium to low shrinkage rate.

This species is very common throughout Malaysia and Indonesia and some in the Phillipines. In Australia the timber is regularly used for domestic decking and flooring among other applications.
